Dental crowns are used to restore a tooth’s size, shape or strength, but they can also be used to improve a tooth’s appearance. Dental crowns are considered if someone has a crooked or chipped tooth, a tooth with weakened enamel or with heavy staining. Dental crowns are very thorough, completely covering the visible section of the tooth.
There are several situations that may warrant dental crowns, one of which is tooth decay. Decay can weaken a tooth and make it prone to break, and dental crowns strengthen the tooth to prevent this from happening. If a tooth is already broken then a dental crown will correct the problem, just as it will with a tooth that is worn down considerably. If a tooth has a large filling to the point that there is not much actual tooth left, a dental crown will cover the filling and support the entire tooth, strengthening and protecting the filling. Dental crowns will also hold a dental bridge and cover an implant. Finally, misshapen or discolored teeth can be covered by dental crowns, improving their aesthetic and increasing self-confidence as a result.
Clearly every situation is different and one size does not fit all, the majority of the crowns which we provide are all ceramic crowns fabricated with CEREC technology. These ceramic crowns are stronger than the porcelain crowns of the past, and obviously look more natural than metal crowns.
We are one of the few dentists in the area which are capable of making single visit crowns. Instead of taking a gooey impression, wearing a temporary crown for weeks while worrying it will come off, we can deliver your custom ceramic crown in one visit. Patients love not having to set a second appointment and take more time out of their schedule to come to the dentist. These crowns are also bonded to the tooth, making them even stronger and conserve more of your natural tooth structure, giving the patient an excellent outcome.
Here at Anderson Dental we have a long history with dental crowns and our experience means we can give you the best advice regarding types of crowns, too.
